• She meets Lio
• Shes wondering why her dad cheated on her mom and is trying to make sense of it all.
• She is more accepting of her new family
• has graduated from university but is at home wondering what to do with her life
• receives letters from her friends and is jealous of what they are doing
• resents her father for "keeping her cooped up"
• spots her father's jeep at the yellow house
• falling in love with Lio
• finds the letters her father has kept from here
• goes to the Discovery Day Dance

  • tells Trujillo that she wants to become a lawyer

Maria Teresa

• She hates men now
• She is mad that her dad's mistress and her children came to the funeral
• She is not very accepting of her new family.
• this is where we learn that the father has died
• is suspicious of Manolo
• goes to college
• 18 at this point
• has strange dreams

Patria:

• She's pregnant again.
• Join's a christian cultural group.
• Opens her house for the revolutionary meetings.
• After the retreat she becoms a radical about the revolution.
• is frightened for Mate and Minerva
• sends her son to a religious school in hopes that will keep him from politics
• gets involved with the movement in small ways
• goes to the religious retreat and is caught in a crossfire and she sees a young boy get killed
• Peditro finally agrees to join the movement and their home becomes the front for the 14th of June movement...which is trying to overthrow the government

• Marries jaimito.
• Likes Lio but knows that he also likes Minerva
• jealous of Minerva but also wants to protect her

• Mama liked Lio...but she was also iliterate and couldn't read about him in the papers

• Minerva is in love with him
• Had "a party for homosexuals and criminals"
• Exiled in Venezuela
• Dede was in love with him as well
• Dede burns the letter Lio gave her to give to Minerva
• fled the country to escape the Trujillo regime
• sends Minerva letters, but her father hides them from her

Manuel de Moya

• "Secretary of State" For Trijillo
• Real Job is to get young girls for Trijillo

Margarita
-Calls herself a Mirabal
-oldest of the sisters of the father's 2nd family
-Minerva wants her and her sisters to get an education.
-Gave Patria a note from Maria Teresa and family in prison.

-The uncle of the Mirabal sister's.
-Brother of mrs. mirabal
-and used to gamble with Trujillo
-gave Trujillo the "loaded" dice
-mama drops his name when she is trying to get her husband out of jail

• she meets him while he is "gun running"

• Lived through a Revolution 40 years ago.
• Has 4 daughters.
• is learning to read
• knows about her husband's cheating

• Has another familoy with 4 other daughters.
• Wealthy farmer.
• Friends with a high up general in Trujilo's Regime.
• dies from heart complications due to his time in jail
